Mary S. Irwin Wood was born 1 October 1866 at Forest Grove, the Washington County, Georgia plantation home of her grandfather, Col. Thomas Jefferson Warthen. She moved to Savannah, Georgia after marrying James Solomon Wood (1851-1927), a cotton factor and commission merchant in the city. The couple had the following four children: Jared Irwin Wood, Augusta Wood DuBose, Raiford James Wood, and Rosalind Wood Chapman. She died on 12 March 1954 at her residence on Whitaker Street in Savannah.
