Geoffrey McLean graduated from the North Carolina State University School of Design in 1969 with a degree in landscape architecture. He studied under noted landscape architect Lewis Clarke. His firm, Geoffrey McLean & Company, commenced business in 1971. In addition to being a licensed landscape architect, McLean is also a professional engineer. He has been a member of the Wake County Planning Board and Board of Supervisors for the Wake County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was president of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects from 1979 to 1981.
