Diane Nielsen Call was born in Walnut Creek, California in 1668 and moved from coast to coast until 10 years of age, when she and her family settled in Orem, Utah. At the age of 20 she graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in English. She married her husband, Joshua Jay Call two years later with whom she moved to Berkeley, California in order for her husband to attend law school. Upon her husband's graduation, Call, with their family of five children, returned to Provo, Utah where Call began graduate work in English.
