David Gordon was born July 12, 1935. He received a B.A. degree from Carleton College in 1956; an M.S. in Journalism from Columbia University in 1958; an M.S. in Political Science in 1959 and a Ph.D. in Mass Communications in 1967, both from the University of Wisconsin.

At Carleton College, Gordon was the student Sports News Director during the 1955-1956 school year. For six years, from 1958-1964, he worked for the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison, Wisconsin as a General Assignment Reporter, City Hall reporter and Drama and Music reviewer. From 1965-1968, he was Assistant to the Mayor of Madison. He also served as an Instructor of Journalism at the University of Wisconsin for one year.

In 1969, Gordon joined the faculty of the Medill School of Journalism as an Associate Professor. He taught courses in The Press and Society, News Media and Society, Government and the Press, Law of Journalism, and Reporting Public Affairs. Additionally, he was the Master of the NU College of Community Studies.

Gordon was very active in University committee work, including the Ad Hoc Curriculum Committee from 1969-1975; the Course and Teacher Evaluation Council, 1970-1980; the Race Relations Information Center, 1970-1972; the Student Scholarships Committee, 1974; the Petitions Committee, 1974-1980; and the Black Expo, 1971. In 1974-1975 he was Coordinator for the Chicago Field Study Program at the College of Community Studies.

He has published articles in various journals including the Columbia Journal and the NU Report. He has also presented papers at various professional meetings including “Chicago Journalism and Ethical Principles: Preliminary Survey Results” which he gave at the 1979 meeting of the Mass Communications and Society Division of the Association for Education in Journalism.

Gordon served as chairman of the Professional Freedom and Responsibility Committee and of the Nominating Committee of the Association for Education in Journalism in 1979-1980; as a member of the Advisory Board of that group for 1977, and as a member of the District 65 School Board in Evanston where he served on the Committee on Attendance Areas and Racial Balance in 1972-1973, and on the district's staff development and evaluation committee. He also served as legislative chairman of the Noyes School PTA.
