Moles was born and raised in Colorado, where he attended Colorado Agricultural College, now Colorado State University. He later moved to New Mexico where he worked as a County Agricultural Agent in Aztec and an administrator at New Mexico Agricultural College (now New Mexico State University) in Las Cruces.

Hunter S. Moles (6-17-1891 -) was born in Canon City, Colorado, the oldest of six children (two boys and four girls), to Oliver Stephen Moles and Mary Hunter Moles. While a junior in East Denver High School, Moles began keeping a daily diary and scrapbook of his personal, family and professional experiences. Moles graduated from high school and Colorado Agricultural College in Fort Collins; taught at Colorado Reformatory School in Buena Vista and high school in Greeley; and managed a farm/ranch in Southern Colorado. From 1917 to 1925, Moles resided in Aztec, New Mexico as a County Agricultural Agent and later in Las Cruces as a County Agent Leader and Assistant Director of Agricultural Extension at New Mexico Agricultural College. Moles left New Mexico in 1925 to assume a similar position in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
