Margaret (Smith) Sawtell grew up in Detroit, the daughter of automotive pioneer Samuel L. Smith, and moved to Boston in 1920. She was president of Denison House, a settlement house in Boston's South End, and of the Women's Educational and Industrial Union, also in Boston.
