Solomon Palmer was born 1839 Aug. 23 to Solomon and Elizabeth H. Palmer in Blount County, Ala. He graduated from the University of Ala., 1861, and fought in the Civil War as part of the 19th Ala. Infantry Regiment.

He represented Blount Co. in the Ala. Legislature, 1865-1867. On 1867 Feb. 24 he married Virginia A. Law. During the marriage they had seven daughters and one son. In 1870 Solomon was admitted to the bar. In 1874 the family moved to Guntersville, where he edited the Guntersville Democrat, 1882-1886. In 1884 he was elected State Supt. of Education, and he held that post until 1890. From then until his death, 1896 May 15, he was president of East Lake Atheneum.

Maude Elizabeth Palmer, b. ca. 1874, was a daughter of Solomon and Virginia A. Palmer.

Virginia Lyda Palmer was a daughter of Solomon and Virginia A. Palmer. She was born 1879 Aug. 24.

Children born to Solomon and Virginia not having papers in this collection include Lillian Belle, b. 1867; Rosie A., b. 1869; Claude, the twin of Maude Louisa Octavia, b. 1876.
