MOCA was opened in 1983 following planning by an Artists Advisory Committee and others who wished to establish an alternative, contemporary art museum. Planning sessions were held in late 1979 through 1982 in various artist committee members' studios or homes. DeWain Valentine was a key figure in the Museum's early development.
