Michael Heidelberger, chemist, was born in New York, N.Y., on 29 Apr. 1888; he received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1911. He married Nina Tachau (d. 1946) in 1916, then Charlotte Rosen (d. 1988) in 1956. Heidelberger held teaching positions as professor of biochemistry and immuno-chemistry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York; professor of immunochemistry at Rutgers University; and professor of pathology at the New York University School of Medicine. He is considered the founder of immunochemistry. His areas of research included organic chemistry, sodium-uranium compounds, chemotherapy, and the chemistry of immune reactions.
