Planter (Ship)
Whaling vessel, out of Nantucket, Mass., on a voyage (1837-1841) mastered by Eben M. Hinckley; owner: William B. Coffin.

Charleston, South Carolina steamship owned by John Ferguson. The Planter was built in Charleston in 1860, and served as an armed dispatch boat and transport attached to the engineer department at Charleston under Brig. Gen. Roswell Sabine Ripley of the Confederate States of America Army. On May 12th, 1862, while her captain Charles J. Relyea was ashore, the vessel was commandeered by Robert Smalls, a slave who was the Planter's pilot. He delivered the ship to the Union fleet blockading Charleston Harbor. Smalls later became a U.S. Representative from South Carolina.
