The Unemployment Compensation Commission of New Mexico was established in 1936 (1936 NM Laws, Chp. 1. Sec. 1-22). In 1941 the name of the Commission was changed to the Employment Security Commission (1941 NM, Laws 206, Sec. 1). In 1977 the Commission was abolished and its functions were transferred to the Employment Services Division of the newly-established Human Services Department (1977 NM Laws, Chp. 252, Sec. 1-14). In 1979 the Division was abolished and its functions were transferred to the newly-established Employment Security Department (1979 NM Laws, Chp. 280, Sec. 1-55). In 1987 the Department was abolished and its functions were transferred to the Employment Security Division of the newly-established Department of Labor (1987 NM Laws, Chp. 342, Sec. 3-4). The Employment Security Division has the authority to administer funds to compensate the unemployed.
