Max Frederick Meyer was born in Danzig, Germany in 1873. Meyer graduated from the Gymnasium Academicum of the municipality. Meyer completed his doctoral thesis on acoustics at the University of Berlin, with German philosopher and psychologist Carl Stumpf. Meyer received two post-doctoral fellowships to continue in his studies of acoustics before traveling to the United States in 1889.
In 1990, Meyer was appointed professor of experimental psychology at the University of Missouri.
