John L. Casteel was born in Randolph, Nebraska and educated at Nebraska Wesleyan University and Northwestern University.

He married Audeline Boughn in 1929. He taught speech at the University of Oregon, 1931-1942, ordained to the Congregational ministry in 1942 and taught speech at Union Theological Seminary in New York.
