José Lezama Lima was born in Cuba in 1910, he studied law at the University of Havana and graduated in 1938. Poet, novelist and essayist, he had a solid foundation in the classics of the Spanish Golden Age and avidly studied the French Symbolists who influenced his first book of poems. Over the years his works have been studied by literary critics and have been translated into several languages. Lezama Lima has had a profound influence on Cuban and Latin American writers and his works still receive international recognition. He died in Havana in 1976.
