Soldier and statesman Lafayette (1757-1834), French hero of the American Revolution, invited by President Monroe to visit the United States, toured every state of the union during 1824-1825. He visited Lexington and Concord Sept. 2, 1824. A fifteen-member Committee of Arrangements was appointed in Concord to prepare for the occasion, which was marked by addresses and refreshments under an open tent and by a military parade. The celebration generated some ill-will toward the Committee, which some felt had deliberately excluded the common man.
