William H. Dunn was born 1844 in Milton, New York to William and Eliza Dunn. The family relocated to Ganges, Allegan, Michigan between 1850 and 1860. When Dunn was 18, he enlisted in Company I, Fifth Cavalry on August 14, 1862. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in Company D of the Tenth Michigan Cavalry, later joining Company E. On January 6, 1865, he was promoted to Captain, and later advanced his title to Inspector, First Brigade, First Cavalry Division, Department Cumberland. On April 11, 1865, he was promoted to Brevet Major, U.S. Volunteers for "gallantry in action at Abbott's Creek, N.C." He mustered out on November 11, 1865. On August 19, 1866, he married Mary Ketchum in Allegan County, Michigan. They had two daughters, Emily (b. ca. 1872) and Alice (b. ca. 1878). He died in 1934 and is buried in Taylor Cemetery in Ganges, Michigan.
