District Eight was chartered on September 1, 1937 with St. Louis Local 1102 the first member. In 1949 UE was expelled from the CIO and then merged with FE. District Eight grew to represent 22,000 workers in 30 locals in Iowa and Illinois by the early 1950s and moved its headquarters to Rock Island. District Eight began to lose locals to raiding and in March 1955 voted to have UE merge with another international union. In November 1955 District Eight merged with the International Association of Machinists.
