John Rose Troup, d. 1919; senior surviving (transport) officer of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition led by Henry M. Stanley; expedition crossed the Congo three times, underwent great hardships and returned with only a third of the original men; Stanley wrote In Darkest Africa following this trip; Troup published his book about the trip in 1890.
