Julius Benedict Bearnson was born on 20 October 1887 in Spanish Fork, Utah. He received a B.S. degree from the Utah Agricultural College, an A.M. degree from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He served as superintendent, principal, and teacher for various schools and school districts in Utah. Bearnson was a professor of economics at the University of Utah for over twenty years. He taught economics, labor economics, and labor legislation. He also belonged to various economic and scientific organizations.
