Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, La.). Dept. of Chemistry.
The history of the Department of Chemistry at Louisiana State University is closely related to the development of the Department of Chemical Engineering because of the enormous influence of Dr. Charles E. Coates on both departments. The incorporation of the Audubon Sugar School into the university in 1897 and Coates' abiding interest in sugar engineering led to the eventual development in 1937 of a separate department of chemical engineering within the College of Engineering. During the years of the bulk of this collection (1959-1970) chemistry at LSU experienced rapid growth with research in air pollution, vitamin-enriched rice, water sanitation, sugar refining, and agricultural research.
