Lynds, Elam, Capt.
Elam Lynds, prison administrator, oversaw construction of the new Mount Pleasant State Prison on the bank of the Hudson River at Sing Sing, NY. Known as a strict disciplinarian (and often accused of cruelty) he was twice warden at Sing Sing, and twice warden at the Auburn State Prison. He also worked as a hatmaker and served as an officer in the War of 1812.
