Simon and James Doyle, of Rushville, Illinois, enlisted in the 1st Illinois Volunteers in June 1846. The regiment was mustered out the following spring and the brothers enlisted in the Schuyler Rangers, an independent cavalry troop attached to General Wool's command. 18 items (57 p.).

Doyle, son of Edward Doyle of Rushville, Illinois, served in the Mexican War as 2d Lt. in Dunlap's Company of Illinois Cavalry. He traveled to California with his brother James and a company of Rushville friends in 1849, returned home, and traveled a second time to California with his brother A. J. Doyle.
