Child development educator. Joan E. Herwig received her B.S. (1965) in home economics education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout; an M.S. (1971) in child development from Iowa State University; and a Ph.D (1978) in child development from Purdue University. Herwig has been employed by the Dept. of Child Development at Iowa State as an Instructor (1971-1978); Assistant Professor (1978-1982); and as Associate Professor (1982- ).

Dr. Herwig's major field of research is the play of young children in the context of the learning environment both indoors and outdoors; influences of kindergarten, preschools and public school programs; and effects of teaching strategies on young children's learning.
