Alma Whiffen Barksdale (1916-1981) was a mycologist and authority on filamentous aquatic fungi in the genus Achlya. She discovered cycloheximide, an antifungal agent while working for Upjohn Company's Department of Antibiotic Research (1943-1952). She joined The New York Botanical Garden as a research associate in 1952. Her work centered on the cytology, nutrition, and taxonomy of aquatic fungi and sexual reproduction in Achlya. From 1972-1975 she was Senior Botanist. She received her A.B. (1937) from Maryville College, Maryville, TN and her M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina. She conducted postdoctoral research under Dr. John N. Couch and was a National Research Council Fellow with Dr. William H. Weston at Harvard University from 1942-1943. She served on the editorial board of Mycologia (1949-1959) and as its book review editor (1969) and as Secretary-Treasurer of the Mycological Society of America (1971-1973). She was born in Hammonton, NJ on October 25, 1916. She died on July 5, 1981.
