Sandra Barty was a part-time member of Synanon from 1967 to 1970 and a full-time Synanon resident from 1970 to 1990. She received a doctorate in interdisciplinary studies from the Union Institute and University Graduate College (Cincinnati, Ohio) in 2003.
Synanon was founded by Charles E. "Chuck" Dederich in 1958 as a drug rehabilitation center. In the 1960s, it transformed into an alternative community and eventually became known as the Church of Synanon, infamous for reports of unusual and often extreme practices. Despite some success as a rehabilitation center, Synanon closed under the weight of a series of increasingly serious legal allegations.
