Sir Basil Ferdinand Jamieson Schonland (1896-1972) was born on 5 February 1896 in Grahamstown, Cape Colony. He entered Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, in 1914, and carried out research in the Cavendish Laboratory, 1920-1922. He was a professor in South Africa, 1922-1954; Deputy Director, then Director, of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, 1954-1960; and Director of the Research Group, United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, 1960-1961. Schonland wrote Atmospheric electricity, 1932 (2nd ed. 1953); The flight of thunderbolts, 1950 (2nd ed. 1964), and The atomists, 1805-1933, 1968. He died on 24 November 1972 in Shawford, Hampshire.
