Hide Profile

George Tate (1840-1912), a native of Orange County, N.Y. In 1854-1859, he worked various jobs in Chautauqua County, including installing gas lamps for Fredonia Gas Co., briefly dabbling in book trade, and working for Aaron Kellogg & Co. which he left in 1859, in order to go to school. He enrolled in Fredonia Academy and worked as a janitor there to pay his tuition. In May 1861 he enlisted in Co. D of the 72nd New York Infantry (3rd Excelsior). The regiment served at the defenses of Washington, D.C., until March, 1862, and then fought in Lower Maryland and Virginia, taking part in the Peninsular Campaign, Pope's Campaign in Northern Virginia, the battle of Fredericksburg, Va., "Mud March," and Chancellorsville Campaign. Tate was wounded and captured at Chancellorville, May 3, 1863, and paroled the next day. While in the hospital, he had interviews with Daniel Sickles and Joseph Hooker; the latter obtained a furlough for him. Tate was back with his regiment in September, thereby missing the Gettysburg Campaign. In December of 1863, he re-enlisted, as a veteran volunteer, for three-year service. In June of 1864 he, along with other veterans, was transferred to the 120th Regiment of New York Infantry. He took part in 1863, 1864, and 1865 campaigns -- Bristoe, the advance to the Rappahannock, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House, North Anna River, Totopotomoy, Cold Harbor, operations before Petersburg, the siege of Petersburg, Appomattox Campaign and Appomattox Court House. On May 16, 1865, Tate received his commission of Second Lieutenant in the 41st Regiment of Colored Infantry. He served at Brazos Santiago and Edenburg, Texas, and was discharged from service on September 20, 1865. He then returned to Chautauqua County and lived in or around Fredonia. Two 1866 receipts for tuition at Fredonia Academy indicate that he went back to school soon after he returned home. His wife, Eliza Brown, was a graduate of Fredonia Academy (class of 1862), and his two daughters, Elnora and Ada, graduated from the Fredonia Normal School in 1886 and 1891.
