Hyman Joseph Ettlinger was born September 1, 1889, in St. Louis, Missouri, and was educated at Washington University (1910) and Harvard University (1911, 1920). He joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin in 1913, retiring in 1968. He was well-known for his ability as a teacher. Ettliner's research was in differential equations and the calculus of variations. He was associated with the UT Defense Research Laboratory, where he worked on aerodynamics. He was chairman of the Department of Pure Mathematics for about 25 years. He died in Austin on June 8, 1986.
