John G. Goll was a dominant figure in the Michigan oil industry. Goll was a contractor for Saginaw Prospecting Company. He drilled the first commercial oil well in Michigan in the Deindorfer Woods in August 1925. He was president of Goll, Graves & Mechling and associated with the most important oil discoveries in the state of Michigan. John Goll married Florence Putnam Rathbone in 1909. They had 2 children: a son named John Putnam Goll who was killed in an automobile accident in 1929 and a daughter named Frances Goll Mills. He was a keen hunter and fisher and was active in the Saginaw Gun Club and the Saginaw Field and Stream Club. He was a member of the Saginaw Club, the YMCA and he was associated with several other councils and lodges.
