John J. Hughes, Sr., was born in Lee County, Ark., in 1859. He married Martha Elizabeth Hamner in the 1880s. He became one of the wealthiest farmers and businessmen in Lee County. He owned several large farms and was president of the Bank of Haynes and the Bank of Hughes. In 1911 Hughes killed a man during an altercation in Memphis, Tenn. He was sentenced to life in prison but was pardoned after serving only a few months. He died in 1920.
