William Richard Arnold (1881-1965) was born in Wooster, Ohio. He graduated from St. Joseph's College in 1908 and finished his seminary studies in the same year when he was made clergy in the Roman Catholic Church. He received his commission in the Chaplain Corps in 1913, and served in the U.S. and abroad until 1937. From 1937 to 1945 he was chief of chaplains. He rose in rank to brigadier general in 1941 and major general in 1944. He retired in 1945 and was decorated with the Distinguished Service Medal.
