Wendall Broomhall was born in Me. in 1919 and enlisted in the Army at Portland, Me. in 1942 and attained the rank of Sergeant. At the time of his enlistment he had four years of age, was a sports instructor and official, and unmarried. Broomhall served with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Lewis, Wash., Fort Ord, Calif., Kiska Island, Alaska, Camp Hale, Colo., Camp Swift, Tex., and in Italy. He served with several units, the principal being Company A of 87th Infantry. In 1947, Broomhall was selected to represent the U.S. as a cross country skier at the 1948 Winter Olympics held in St. Moritz, Switzerland. He also participated in the Columbia Ice Fields expedition.
