Kollen immigrated to America in 1851 and settled in Western Michigan. Kollen graduated from both the Holland Academy (1864) and Hope College (1868). In 1871 Kollen was appointed to the faculty of Hope College as a professor of mathematics, natural philosophy, and astronomy. While at Hope College, Kollen served as financial agent, chair of the mathematics department, and president of the college (1893-1911). He resigned in 1911.
