Beatrice M. Bruner Dowd, a native of Rolfe, IA, received a B.A. (1941) in Mathematics from Iowa State College. In 1943, Dowd enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and was sent to the University of California at Los Angeles to attend Meteorological School. She worked as a Naval Weather Forecaster until her discharge in 1947. She then was employed by Sylvania (later GTE Government Systems) (1958-1986) as an electronics technician; Engineering Section Head; and Engineering Dept. Manager.

Dowd was also involved with the Association of Old Crows (AOC), an organization related to the Electronic Warfare profession. She served in a variety of local and national positions with the AOC, and received certificates of merit in 1980 and 1983, and was awarded the AOC Special Medal in 1988.
