Lemann family.
The Lemann family moved from Newport, R.I., to Donaldsonville, La., in the 1860s, and built and operated seven sugar plantations, among other businesses, in the region. The plantations were named Palo Alto, Belle Terre, Peytavin, Dugas, Souvenir, Crescent, and Rodriguez; these flourished during the remainder of the nineteenth century.
