French soldier and statesman.
He commanded an infantry regiment from the age of fifteen, fighting against the Spanish in Picardie and in Flanders. Following in the path of his powerful and influential uncle, Cardinal Richelieu, he was appointed head of the department of navigation in 1636, and in 1639, he received the title of grandmaster of the fleet. He was rewarded for his services as ambassador to Portugal with control of Aunis and La Rochelle, and inherited from Richelieu the duchy of Fronsac. He died at the age of twenty-seven, while fighting the Spanish in Tuscany.
