Survey engineer. Employed by Union Pacific Railroad. McCartney figured prominently in the construction of the Northern Pacific R.R., the Union Pacific R.R., the San Pedro Los Angeles and Salt Lake R.R., and the Western Pacific R.R. He also had vested interests in merchandising firms and land developments and developed investments in gold, copper, iron, coal, oil and water.
