John R. Alison was born on November 21, 1912, the son of Grover Alison and Edelweiss Price, in Gainesville, Florida. He received his A.B.S. in industrial engineering form the University of Florida. From 1936 to 1946, Alison served in the U.S. Air Force, and was decorated with the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit. He was Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Aeronautics from 1947 to 1949, and was Vice President of the Northrop Corporation in Arlington, Virginia from 1949 to 1953. He married Kathlene Margaret Arcidiano on October 21, 1953.
