The Office of Vice President for University College, now Academic Affairs, was responsible for graduate and undergraduate programs in the Schools of Business, Education, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Humanities. The dean of UAB Special Studies and the directors of Mervyn Sterne Library and the Center for Urban Affairs also reported to the vice president. The vice president was the principle line academic and administrative officer of University College and reported directly to the president of UAB. The vice president was primarily concerned with such matters as role and scope, academic programs, institutional planning and priorities, financies, organization, administration, faculty, students, extramural academic activities, resource development, community and public affairs, and other duties as assigned by the president. The Office was created in 1971 from the College of General Studies and became the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs in 1989.
