Dill Pickle Club (Chicago, Ill.)

Hide Profile

Bohemian Chicago social club, founded by former labor activist Jack Jones in 1916, to provide an unconventional meeting-place for the uninhibited and free-thinking, including Socialists, atheists, anarchists, liberated women, lecturers and soap-box orators, artists, actors, playwrights, literary figures, etc.

Chartered in 1917, the Dil-Pickle (as it was first known) was a free-speech forum frequented by Ben Reitman, Carl Sandburg, Edgar Lee Masters, Maxwell Bodenheim, Ben Hecht, Charles MacArthur, Sherwood Anderson, Floyd Dell and many others. The club's fortunes declined as the Depression progressed, and in 1932 tax difficulties caused its demise.

From the description of Dill Pickle Club records, 1906-1941, bulk 1915-1935. (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 46851873
