As a naturalist, author, and teacher, Alan Reid was strongly associated with the development of environmental education in Australia. After working in a number of schools in Victoria in the 1950s, Reid was a nature studies officer of the Victorian Education Department, and commenced working for the Australian Conservation Foundation in 1970. In 1993 Reid was awarded the Australian Natural History Medal for his contribution to environmental education and ornithology.
