John W. Shirley, who had been North Carolina State College's Dean of the School of General Studies since 1948, became the first Dean of the Faculty in November 1955. In 1967, the title of Dean of Faculty was changed to Provost, and in 1971 changed again to Provost and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs. By 2007 the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs had become the chief academic officer under the Chancellor of the University.
