Inquisition
The Holy Office of Inquisition was established in 1571 to maintain the purity of the Catholic faith and preserve religious orthodoxy but it later assumed a much broader charge. Jews were forced to convert or leave and Protestantism was forbidden. Many colonists, including clergy, were tried for moral offenses. The tribunal was not abolished until 1820.
