Variant namesCallimachos, a journalist, priest, and author, was born in Madytos, Turkey. He was educated in Istanbul, Smyrna, and Athens, and came to the United States in 1914. He was active in many Greek and Greek American associations. In his student days, he participated in the Hellenismos Society and later managed its publication, Hellenismos. He toured the Near East and Greece for the society "Regeneration," promoting establishment of Greek night schools. After coming to the United States, he participated in the Greek American Progressive Association. He was also a member of the Clergy Club, the Greater New York Federation of Churchs, the New York Academy of Political Science, the Institute Egyptien, the XVI International Congress of Orientalists, and the Honorary Institute of Byzantine Music (Istanbul). During his career, he lectured for the Panhellenic Union of America, and edited the daily Ethnikos Keryx (National Herald, New York), National Renaissance (a Greek American monthly), Eleutheros Typos (Free Press, Chicago), and Vema tes GKAPA (Tribune of GAPA, Pittsburgh, PA). Callimachos served from 1906-1914 as secretary of the Patriarchate of Alexandria and later published a monograph on the Patriarchate. He was a volunteer chaplain with the Greek Army during the Balkan Wars (1912-1913).
