Biography

Chapman was born in Marion, North Carolina on November 18, 1909. He studied art in New York and worked as a newspaper and magazine illustrator, before moving to California (1945), where he started work as a set painter. Chapman moved to Arabia and worked as a painter in the oil industry (1951-56) and returned to the entertainment industry (1958), becoming known as "Handlebars" because of his rather large mustache. He worked on numerous projects including the television series Batman, Planet of the Apes, and The Legend of Jesse James and the motion pictures Johnny Got His Gun, The Poseidon Adventure, and The Towering Inferno . Throughout his life he enjoyed sketching, painting, and creating art. Chapman died September 26, 1985.
