Helge Ellis Ederstrom was born on February 28, 1908, in Torsas, Sweden, to Herman and Alma Ederstrom. He received his B.S. from Beloit College(Wisconsin) in 1937. After he received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Chicago, he taught there and at the medical schools at the University of Missouri(1942-1947) and St. Louis University(1947-1952). In 1952, Ederstrom came to the University of North Dakota, where he taught Physiology and Pharmacology. He received national recognition for his research in vascular medicine and surgery. He retired in 1977 and was named Professor Emeritus of Medicine. For the occasion of the centennial, Ederstrom wrote a departmental history entitled, A History of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1905-1977. Ederstrom also wrote scientific articles and received several awards for his research in the circulatory system. In 1973, he received the UND Medical School Outstanding Teacher Award, and was listed in American Men of Science and Who's Who in the Midwest. He was a member of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), the American Physiology Society, and the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine. Ederstrom was well known in the Midwest for his watercolor paintings of prairie scenes and the local landscape. Helge Ederstrom died Friday, October 2, 1987, at the age of 79.
