Verne E. Chaney was born ca. 1895 in Coloma, Wisconsin. He was employed by the Home Telephone Company in Joplin, Missouri, in 1910 and then by the Theodore Gary & Co. (a telephone firm) in 1912. On June 4, 1917, Chaney enlisted in the 2nd Missouri Field Artillery Regiment of the National Guard and on August 5, 1917, the regiment was called into federal service as the 129th Field Artillery. From 1918 to 1919, he served in France as a sergeant with Battery D of the 129th Field Artillery. He retired in 1956 after a long career with Theodore Gary & Co. During that time, he served as the company's vice president, president, and as a member of the board of directors. He died in San Francisco, California, on July 28, 1973.
