Jacob Dolson Cox was a Union Army general and politician from Ohio. During the Civil War, Cox headed the Dept. of the Kanawha, commanded the IX Corps of the Army of Virginia, and in 1863, assumed command of the District of Ohio and of the 3rd Division, XXIII Corps. After the war, he was Governor of Ohio (1866-67) and was President Grant's Secretary of the Interior (1869-1870). He was also president of the Wabash Railroad and was elected to Congress in 1876. He authored Military Reminiscences of the Civil War (1900).
