The Sabel Family consisted of Walter and his three sons, Robert, Richard, and Gorden. Walter R. Sabel was born 27 November 1894 and grew up in Chicago. He was drafted in August 1917, but was medically discharged for flat feet. In February 1918 the Army changed his draft status and he was inducted on 2 April 1918. After basic training at Camp Grant, he was sent to Camp Logan, Texas and assigned to Company B, 108th Ammunition Supply Train, 58th Field Artillery Brigade, 33rd Infantry Division. On 26 May 1918, Sabel's company entrained for Le Harve, France via Camp Merritt, New Jersey and Liverpool, England. After seeing action in the St. Mihiel Offensive, and the 2nd Battle of the Somme and duty in the Occupation Army in Luxembourg he left France for the United States on 12 May 1919. He was discharged from the service in Chicago on 4 June 1919. He soon found work as the art director of Popular Mechanics magazine and was active in various veteran organizations. Sabel died 3 July 1991. Walter's sons were soldiers in WWII. Robert (Bob) was in the 3rd Bomb Division, 8th Army Air Force, Richard (Dick) was in the Royal Canadian Air Force while Gorden was part of the 20th Army Air Force in the Pacific.
