John D. Humphries was born in 1873 near Hapeville, Clayton County, Georgia, to Amos Daniel Humphries and Annis Elizabeth Pope. After graduating from The University of Georgia in 1893, Humphries practiced law with the firm of Joseph W. Humphries in Atlanta until 1 January 1919. Humphries was elected Mayor of Hapeville in Fulton County on 1 January 1914 and served until 1919. In 1919, he served as a judge on the Atlanta Circuit and was a life member of the American Law Institute. He married Lillie Marvin Jones on 14 June 1900 and had three children, Annis Jones, Josephine Grace and John D., Jr. Judge Humphries died in Fulton County, Georgia, on 22 October 1942.
